Weather hampers disc tossers' efforts to prep for ultimate tournament

With a tournament in Las Vegas coming this weekend, the Utah State University Ultimate team has had a minor setback.

Instead of being outside, weather conditions have forced the team — known as the "Mad Cow" squad — to practice in the USU Fieldhouse. And that’s left the team at a disadvantage, said team member Benjamin Driggs.

“Because there isn’t any wind in the Fieldhouse, the team gets used to throwing without it,” Driggs said.

“Indoor play limits our field size and throws are easier, so you don’t get as much experience,” said David Folkner, the team’s president. “We are in better shape, though.”

To prepare for upcoming tournaments, the team practices three nights a week. According to Driggs, the team meets Monday and Tuesday for conditioning and again on Thursday to scrimmage and run drills.

This Saturday and Sunday, the USU ultimate Frisbee team will participate in the Trouble in Vegas tournament located in Sin City. More than 100 college and club teams from around the nation will be competing. This will be the team’s first tournament of the semester.

Team advisor Harold Ikerd said this the best team he has seen in 10 years.

“We are a seriously competitive team... and are very serious about the sport,” Folkner said.
