Some ASUSU candidates may step uncontested into new roles

Thirty-eight students are on the ballot for the Associated Students of Utah State University election, which will be held next week.

In most cases, those candidates are vying with other students for positions on the Executive Council, Academic Senate or Graduate Senate.

But four candidates will all but walk into their new positions.

Barring a strong write-in drive, Student Nutrition Access Center founder Jordan Hunt will become academic senate president, ASUSU Athletics and Campus Rec Committee member Karson Kalian will become athletics vice president, A-team member Mariana Ochoa will become diversity vice president, and Val R. Christensen Service Center recruitment coordinator Jeremy Nef will become service vice president.

“The people that are running for those four positions – I could not imagine anyone that would do a better job,” said Erik Mikkelsen, the current executive council president. “If I could create the premier person for those jobs, I couldn’t have done better.”

One possible reason for the uncontested races: paperwork. Candidates who want to be on the student council must complete the necessary forms, pay a fee and campaign during the week of Feb. 27.

To run for academic senate candidates must not spend more than $200 for campaigning materials. Those running for an executive council position cannot spend more than $400. And candidates must fill out a record of purchases and donations for campaigning. That record must then be approved by the person currently in the position the candidate is seeking.

“We audit very closely for a reason, they can’t be ridiculous about things and they can’t do things that are immoral,” said Kirsten Frank, the current ASUSU vice president. “We like to give as much freedom as possible in these things. We like the creativity.”

The primary election begins Feb. 27; the final vote will begin Feb. 29. Three debates have been scheduled during the week. For more information, visit www.usu.edu/asusu/candidates or www.facebook.com/UtahStateStudentInvolvement
