After losing to Fresno State on Saturday, the Utah State University women’s basketball team made a comeback Saturday with a 22-point win against Idaho State University.
“The girls had a pretty strong chip on their shoulder coming into this game after the Fresno game,” said head coach Raegan Pebley. “But I always feel better after a win – a solid win.”
The team is preparing for the Western Athletic Conference tournament in March. The outcome of the WAC will determine which team will get into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
“I’ve practiced them a little bit longer than I usually do at this time of year but we utilized it as an opportunity for us to improve,” Pebley said.
The team’s hard work paid off today. The final scoreboard read: USU 85, Idaho 63.
“Communication was the key tonight,” said forward Ashlee Brown.
Even with the solid win, USU team members admitted they still had room for improvement.
“Those turnovers are definitely something we need to work on,” Brown said.
Utah State had 11 turnovers in the second half of the game – including eight in the last seven minutes.
“Obviously in the last seven minutes of the game we didn’t handle the pressure and we’d like to see that get better,” Pebley said. “It will get better.”
USU guard Devyn Christensen was arguably the best player of the night, scoring 26 points – nine more than Idaho’s top scorer, Alyssa Charlston. Christensen also contributed in defense – leading the game in steals.
Including today’s victory, the Utah State women’s basketball team has had 19 wins this season and eight losses.
“Every Aggie needs to go to a women’s basketball game,” said T.J. Pratt, a student at USU. “I mean look at that scoreboard, it’s beautiful.”
