On elections eve: What do students want from their candidates?

This week, Utah State University students will get to know their candidates and their causes.

But on the eve of ASUSU election week, do the candidates know what is most important to students?

“The question of what is most important for USU is different for everyone, I think,” said business student Richard Lee. “What is important for USU is different for everyone.”

As an accounting major, Lee said he will be voting for those who can best benefit the Huntsman School of Business, since the majority of his classes and university interactions occur there.

But Lee also believes there are ways candidates can benefit everyone on campus.

“I would like them to represent myself and all students, and stand up to the administration. Not that I don’t like the administration, it’s just nice to have students in there to give input,” Lee said. “I guess what I’m saying is we need people who can relate to the average student.”

Nicole Theurer plays volleyball for USU. She said voters should consider USU athletics.

“USU is really known for its sports. I’m biased because I play volleyball, but basketball obviously is a big deal here and football just had a great season,” Theurer said. “I think we need people who will support athletics so we can become more nationally known.”

While students like Lee and Theurer hope to have more involvement from future student leaders representing them, Jake Taylor, a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said the opposite –independence is key for the Greek community on campus.

“The Greek community is what the candidates pool from because we’re usually the most involved,” Taylor said. “What a candidate can do is keep the Greek community involved but keep them independent so they can do the things they want to do.”

Primary elections run from Monday morning to Tuesday afternoon. The finalists will be announced at 4 p.m. in the Hub.

Final elections run from Wednesday morning to Thursday afternoon. Final election results will be announced at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdayin the TSC auditorium.
