On Friday at 7:30 p.m.,
the Wind Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Trombone Ensemble will be performing at
the annual winter concert at Utah State University’s Kent Concert Hall.
“This is the top band at
Utah State,” said Thomas Rohrer, the conductor and director of bands at USU.
“The Wind Orchestra is an audition group. It’s made up of the best woodwind,
brass and percussion players in the school.”
This will be the group’s
third performance under direction of Rohrer, and the program — Legends: Old and
New — will highlight the American premiere of Symphony No. 2 “La Lenda de Paio
Gómez Chariño” by the Galician composer Anton Alcalde.
Eric Walker, a trombone
player for all three ensembles, said these classical pieces aren’t typical or
boring.
“The Alcalde, it’s really
epic, really cool, simple and catchy,” Walker said. “It’s more contemporary. It
just has a lot of oomph to it.”
Admission is free.
The concert is an ideal
time for instrumentalists to show off their talents before a coming trip to
Nevada in March, Walker said.
“People should come because
it’s great to listen to and great to play for folks that appreciate the music,”
Rohrer said. “People provide energy for the ensemble.”
