Musical talent attempts to bring students back to the museum

On Thursday at 3 p.m., violinist Nathan Southwick will perform at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art event known as Third Thursday at 3.

The event — which offers a free musical performance to students, staff and the general public — is held monthly and is put on by the museum in partnership with the music department at Utah State University.

James Michael Bankhead, the head of Utah State’s Music Department, and Nadra Haffar, the educational curator for the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, have sought performers who can entertain and draw an audience.

“Nathan has great musical capability,” Bankhead said. “He can charm an audience.”

“We want a performance that will be appropriate for the museum and that will draw a good audience,” Haffar said. “I know Mike chose Nathan to perform because he has the talent and will put on a good show.”

Haffar said Southwick has been preparing music to audition with, and the event will be a good opportunity for him to practice his audition material in front of an audience.

Southwick said he is excited for the recital and hopes many students and community members will come.

According to Andrea DeHaan, the administrative coordinator of arts and performance at USU, the event began as an attempt to get students to bring life back into the museum, which had been closed during the fall due to understaffing.
